Do students pay tax in Germany?

Being a student does not change German income tax. What counts is your yearly income: in 2026 the first €12,348 is tax-free. Explained simply.

Short answer: Student status has nothing to do with income tax in Germany. What counts is your income and your tax class. In 2026 the first €12,348 of yearly income is tax-free for everyone, so most students with a part-time job pay little or no income tax over the year.

"Do students also have to pay tax?" Many people ask Qaiser this, and his answer starts with a correction: tax has nothing to do with being a student. It depends on how much you earn and on your tax class.

Everyone gets a tax-free amount

German income tax starts above the basic allowance (Grundfreibetrag). For 2026 it is €12,348 a year for a single person, roughly 1,000 euros a month. Qaiser's video rounds this to 12,000 euros. Source: § 32a EStG · checked 7 Nov 2026

Married couples who are assessed jointly get double: €24,696. His figure of about 25,000 euros for married people (tax class III) reflects this doubled allowance. Source: § 32a(5) EStG · checked 7 Nov 2026

Why tax may still appear on your payslip

Your tax class (Steuerklasse) tells your employer how much wage tax to deduct each month; single people are class I. The employer deducts month by month, not based on your income for the whole year. If you earn more in some months, tax may be deducted even though your yearly income stays under the allowance. A tax return after the year usually gets that money back. Social security contributions are a separate matter from income tax; ask your employer how your job is registered.

What to do in practice

  • Get your tax ID (Steuer-ID). It arrives by post after you register your address.
  • Give it to your employer so you are taxed in the right class.
  • Keep your payslips and the annual wage-tax certificate.
  • If tax was deducted, file a return through the tax office's free portal, ELSTER.

How much you may work in the first place is in the student work guide.
