Short answer: A German student visa rests on two things: an admission letter from a German university (public or private) and proof that you can cover your living costs. Most applicants prove the money with a blocked account (€992 a month in 2026); a formal obligation letter (Verpflichtungserklärung) from someone in Germany or a full scholarship can replace it.

Qaiser's answer to "what does the German student visa need?" fits in one breath: an admission letter and money. Everything else on the checklist supports one of those two.

1. An admission letter from a German university

Public or private, Bachelor's or Master's: you need the university's admission letter (Zulassungsbescheid) before you apply for the visa. How to get a Master's admission covers that step. Indian applicants almost always also need an APS certificate, a document check by the APS office at the German embassy in India. Pakistan has no APS process. 2. Proof that you can pay your living costs

For 2026 the German missions ask for €992 a month, which is €11,904 for a year. Qaiser rounds it to 12,000 euros in his video; use the exact figure when you open the account. Source: pakistan.diplo.de · checked 7 Nov 2026

There are three ways to prove it:

  1. Blocked account (Sperrkonto). An account in your name with a German provider. The money is "blocked" because nobody can withdraw it, you included, until you are in Germany. After you arrive, one monthly amount is released to you each month. It is your money; you are not paying anyone.
  2. Formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung). Someone living in Germany signs at their local foreigners' office that they will cover your costs. Their income has to be high enough for the office to accept it.
  3. A full scholarship that covers living costs, for example from the DAAD.
If you meet any one of these three, you have met the second requirement of the German student visa.

Applying and waiting

You apply to the German embassy or consulate (the "mission") responsible for where you live, following its current checklist. The national (D) visa fee is €75, paid in local currency. Source: pakistan.diplo.de · checked 7 Nov 2026

Waiting times are the part nobody controls. In his October 2026 video Qaiser mentioned that Islamabad was taking about a year and Karachi about six months. Check the mission's own page for today's situation and apply as soon as your admission allows.

Questions people ask

How much money do I need in a blocked account for Germany?

For 2026 the German missions ask for €992 a month, which is €11,904 for a year (pakistan.diplo.de). The amount is reset each year, so follow your mission's current checklist.

Do I get the blocked-account money back?

It is your own money. After you arrive, a fixed monthly amount is released to you each month for living costs; you cannot take it out before arriving.

Can someone in Germany sponsor me instead of a blocked account?

Yes. A person living in Germany can sign a formal obligation (Verpflichtungserklärung) at their local foreigners' office, promising to cover your costs. A full scholarship can also serve as proof.

How long does a German student visa take from Pakistan?

Appointment waiting times change and differ between Islamabad and Karachi. Check the mission's current information and apply as early as your admission allows.
