All guides · Part of: The Opportunity Card guide
Qaiser's reel for people with "neither a bachelor's nor a master's" was aimed at two groups: holders of a Diploma of Associate Engineering (DAE) in mechanical, civil or electrical, and paramedical staff such as nurses, operation theatre assistants, technicians and laboratory assistants. His message: Germany needs these skills, and the Opportunity Card can be a way in, on one condition.
There are many jobs for such people in Germany. The condition is that you must know German.
Your diploma must be a recognised vocational qualification
The Opportunity Card accepts a vocational qualification instead of a degree if it lasted at least two years and is state-recognised in the country where you earned it. A DAE from a board-affiliated institute can fit that description, but it has to be checked. Use the Anerkennung in Deutschland finder and see the diploma section of our recognition guide.
If your diploma is fully recognised in Germany, you count as a skilled worker and do not need points at all. If not, you need at least 6 points. Source: § 20b AufenthG · checked 6 Nov 2026
German A1 or English B2
The basic language requirement is German A1 or English B2. In IELTS terms, Qaiser's rule of thumb is that 6 to 6.5 bands corresponds to B2. Higher German earns extra points, and you will need much more German than A1 to work in a health or technical job. Source: § 20a AufenthG · checked 6 Nov 2026
How the points add up
Points come from partial recognition, German and English, relevant work experience, age, an earlier stay in Germany, and a spouse who also qualifies. Experience only counts if it is in your field. In Qaiser's words, years of feeding the family buffalo do not count.
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Partial recognition of your qualification (compensation measures needed) | 4 |
| German B2 or higher | 3 |
| German B1 | 2 |
| German A2 | 1 |

One year to find a job, with part-time work allowed
The Opportunity Card is issued for up to 12 months. While you search you may work up to 20 hours a week on average and do trial work of up to two weeks with an employer. Once you find a job that fits your qualification, you switch to a work permit. Source: § 20a AufenthG · checked 7 Nov 2026
You must show you can live without help
The card is for searching, so you must prove you can pay your living costs: usually with a blocked account, a formal obligation from someone in Germany, or a part-time job contract. The German mission's checklist states the current monthly amount; our proof-of-funds section links it.
Nurses and paramedical staff need a licence too
Health professions are regulated in Germany. The Opportunity Card can bring you to Germany to look for work. To actually work as a nurse or in many paramedical roles, you also need recognition of your training and a licence from the responsible state authority. That usually includes German, often at B2. Start the recognition process early.

Questions people ask
Can I get the Opportunity Card with a DAE?
Possibly. A DAE can count as a vocational qualification if it lasted at least two years and is state-recognised in Pakistan. It must be assessed; nothing is automatic.
Can nurses and paramedical staff use the Opportunity Card?
Health professions are regulated in Germany, so working in them needs a separate professional licence. The Opportunity Card lets you search for a job, but the licence process for nursing and similar professions runs through the responsible German state authority.
How long is the Opportunity Card valid?
Up to 12 months (§ 20a AufenthG). During that time you may work up to 20 hours a week on average and do trial work of up to two weeks with an employer.
